Insertion of inferior vena caval filter and thromboembolic phenomenon.

چکیده
Thromboembolic phenomena are common in the elderly population and their consequences can be life threatening. Although anticoagulants are the mainstay of therapy, there are conditions in which their use is contraindicated. Alternative therapeutic options involve the use of more invasive techniques to prevent major thromboembolic incidents. We describe a case in which a modified Greenfield titanitim filter was inserted into the inferior venacava to prevent recurrent pulmonary emboli from iliofemoral venous thrombosis. Anticoagulants were contraindicated due to the presence of a haemorrhagic gastritis.

Vena caval filters: a comprehensive review.
Hematologists are often asked to treat patients with venous thromboembolic disease. Although anticoagulation remains the primary therapy for venous thromboembolism, vena caval filters are an important alternative when anticoagulants are contraindicated. To assess the evidence supporting the utility of these devices, a comprehensive review of the English language literature was performed. Except...

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of thrombotic complications in patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) who were treated with percutaneous inferior vena caval interruption in place of anticoagulation. METHODS A retrospective review of all percutaneously placed inferior vena cava filters for 1 year, August 1993 through July 1994, was performed. RESULTS Thirty-...
متن کاملRetrievable Inferior Vena Cava Filters for Venous Thromboembolism
Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used as an alternative to anticoagulants for prevention of fatal pulmonary embolism (PE) in venous thromboembolic disorders. Retrievable IVC filters have become an increasingly attractive option due to the long-term risks of permanent filter placement. These devices are shown to be technically feasible in insertion and retrieval percutaneously while providin...
متن کاملCost-effective method for bedside insertion of vena caval filters in trauma patients.
BACKGROUND The need for patient transport for inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement impacts patient safety, comfort, charges, and nursing care. Bedside, ultrasound-guided IVC filter placement may offer an acceptable, cost-effective alternative. METHODS Prospective cohort study of 55 consecutive trauma patients requiring IVC filter placement. During a 13-month period (August of 1995-Septem...
متن کاملInternal jugular and common femoral venous access for the removal of a long-term embedded vena cava filter.
We describe an inferior vena cava filter retrieval technique requiring triple venous access performed in a 35-year-old male who was referred for filter removal 16 months after its insertion. The filter showed a right-sided tilt with endothelialization of the distal filter struts into the caval wall. Access was required via both internal jugular veins to straighten the filter using a snared-loop...
